Golovin (2:5023/2.25) * Area : DOOM (DOOM) * From : Paul Griggs, 2:252/174 (Fri Oct 21 1994 13:04) * To : All * Subj : [part 3] Alt.doom.announce *************************************************************************** Continuation 2 of a split message to buy a quake server.' 'there will be gravity.' ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------- [people's .plan:] --------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- from johnr@idsoftware.com's .plan: the next game is going to blow doom all to hell. doom totally sucks in comparison to our next game, quakethe fight for justice! quake is going to be a bigger step over doom than doom was over wolf3d (ya know -- doom = pong). we won't start developing quake until fall'94... ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- from help@idsoftware.com's .plan: on july 25th 6:14pm this will not be out until sometime next summer. john carmack is currently designing the engine. multi-player should go something like this: someone owns a fast server somewhere. you dial in and join the game in progress. ten or more people at a time can be in the world. you will not need a pentium to play quake. everyone knows you don't need one for doom either... but it doesn't hurt anything. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- from help@idsoftware.com's .plan: status of quake---updated: tue, aug 9th 11:38am john now has a simple (slow) engine running. it uses converted doom maps and runs them with flats for textures. it looks really cool. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- from help@idsoftware.com's .plan: on september 2nd: ok, imagine this. you have a health thing and you don't need it. you meet someone in the game who has a nice weapon but is really low on health. you guys decide to exchange items. you don't really trust this guy so you bring along a friend and tell him to hide out somewhere with a bead on the other guy's head. you meet somewhere in the middle of a field and face off. you drop your health, he drops his weapon and you both strafe over the object of your desire. you start to back away (not turning your back on him) and suddenly decide you're going to whack this guy before he gets a chance to use that health. you move towards him and draw back with your hammer. he notices this and starts to duck, but it's too late. you smash him in the head and watch him fly down to the ground, landing on his side. you smash his still body a few more times and cause him to explode! now you and your friend pick up all of the items your dead friend left on the ground. as you are walking off you pick up his severed head and put it in a bag. that will come in useful later... when you need something to sacrifice to a demon. ---------------- [version history:] ---------------- 1.00 (early august) - first edition. i simply cut and pasted all the quake quotes from romero and the .plan's in a file and spiffed it up a bit. 1.01 (08/16/94) - added credits to ddt's email about quake and changed the intro. 1.10 (08/22/94) - added the magazine article section and the version history. 1.11 (08/24/94) - jayw's brief quake comment on irc added. 1.20 (08/31/94) - pc format article added. credits section. 1.50 (09/02/94) - quake stuff from help@id's .plan added. 1.55 (09/03/94) - mcgee's comments on quake on irc. 1.55a (09/12/94) - i'm no longer looking for the original quake faq, thanks to those who sent me a copy. finger me for the latest quaketalk. 1.70 (10/14/94) - october pc gamer article added. comments on a true quake faq. slight restructurisations. ------ [outro:] ------ no outro yet. maybe next time ;) -------- [credits:] -------- me, for doing most of the work ;) william lachance <ad904@freenet.carleton.ca> for the pc format article rick hammerstone <rickh@gcctech.com> for getting me a copy of the original quake faq scott bessler <scott@grayfox.svs.com> (jackyl@irc) for an excerpt from his mail with ddt toby nichols <toby_nichols/t/gb/3com%3com@3mail.3com.com> for the october pc gamer article From ryani@geom.umn.edu 19 Oct 1994 09:41:44 +0100 Path: demon!pipex!mantis!mantis!not-for-mail From: ryani@geom.umn.edu (ryani) Newsgroups: alt.games.doom.announce Subject: AN OPEN LETTER TO id software Followup-To: alt.games.doom Date: 19 Oct 1994 09:41:44 +0100 Organization: University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Lines: 71 Sender: tony@mantis.co.uk Approved: doom@mantis.co.uk Message-ID: <382m48$qch@sunforest.mantis.co.uk> NNTP-Posting-Нost: sunforest.mantis.co.uk Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit First of all, a few comments: I have set the Followups-to header, so follow this message up if you want. Second, this is not intended to be a flame. I like id software and love their work. It is simply constructive criticism (I hope) and although it seems to be too late now to do anything about it, here is my opinion. ----- id, Doom ][ is great. The gameplay is great, the levels are great, the secret levels are hilarious, the cooperative play is incredible and the deathmatch play even better. Нowever, it seems to me that there is are a few grave errors in the that the game was set up in terms of data files, etc. First, why does DOS1.666 not allow the reading of both doom2.wad and doom[1].wad at the same time? It would involve the simplicity of a second menu picture in doom2.wad along the lines of "DOOM I//DOOM II" so that the user may select which game he/she wishes to play. This would also need a '-game x' switch where game is 1 or 2, for net play. Finally, doom2.wad would have a TEXTURE3 entry with accompanying P3START and P3END instead of TEXTURE1. This would make design a lot easier, as one could design levels with textures from both games instead of only one, allowing greater variety for those people with both games. Secondly, the non-inclusion of at the very least the pictures of the doom2 enemies in doom.wad (as well as the supershotgun) is distressing. It creates divisions in a very similar-looking group of add-on files. Not even the music names are the same for patches. It makes it much harder for level designers. They have to choose, and the choice involves questions like "Which textures do I want?" and "Well, if I have this theme with these textures, I can't use the supershotgun, which I wanted to put over here." Most likely, the majority of doom fanatics will purchase DOOM ][ and use it, but for those of us without both versions, as well as those who still like DOOM I but want to go on with more enemies, etc., it makes addon .wads a problem. Now that DOOM ][ is out, I ask myself if the creation of new levels for DOOM will stop. I think probably not, considering that there will be people who want to make new levels but only have the first game. Нowever, it will be very much slowed, because of the new variety allowed by the creatures in DOOM ][. Their information and vital statistics are in the executable; why not put their pictures in the data file? As a final point, DOOM ][ is fun. Levels will be created to use it. The game will sell quite well, and many people besides yourselves will profit from it -- not in $$ but in enjoying it and its add-ons. Нowever, the basic oversight of not allowing the variety of the choice between two games (and forcing the users to either have two directories or a really stupid swapping batch file) is annoying and not really worth it. This was a stupid mistake, and although id has resolved that 1.666 will be the last version, I find myself hoping that maybe they will rethink it and perhaps release v1.666p2, or v1.7. Thank you for your time and open-mindedness. -- ryan -- - ... DOOM-(D)estroy (O)pponents (O)ver (M)odem -+- GEcho 1.10+ + Origin: Gunsmoke BBS! 28800! V.34!
